  My experience applies to the new Mt. Pleasant location (Dr. Walker's old practice). The hygienists and office workers are great. They deserve 4 or 5 stars. They're always very friendly and helpful. My hygienist, Kasey, does a great job cleaning my teeth and explaining things to me in layman's terms. This was my first time seeing Dr. McDonald, so maybe I got the wrong impression of him. However, my experience with him was not what I hoped for. He used a lot of jargon and didn't have the most reassuring bedside manner in my opinion. I've been told over and over again at the dentist that I have a lot of crowding issues that could be fixed with orthodontics, but for financial and personal reasons, I choose not to fix them at this time. Since this was Dr. McDonald's first examination of my teeth, I expected him to say the same, which is fine. Yet he seemed to imply that besides the health risks associated with crowded teeth, the reason I should have this problem fixed is because I would have a more pleasing smile. Perhaps he meant well, but I took his statement as a veiled insult that I don't have a nice smile (there's more to having a nice smile than having perfectly straight teeth). It also seemed like a poor excuse to have a lot of very expensive work done on my teeth. I'm don't like feeling as if I'm being pressured to have a procedure done purely for the sake of vanity, especially since I can't afford it even if I wanted to have it done. I was also a little irked that he couldn't take the time to tell me after examining my teeth that I have two small cavities, where they are, and what he planned to do about them. He left it for the hygienist to tell me about it all. Finally, as someone about to apply for Medicaid, I think Dr. McDonald should consider taking Medicaid insurance, such as the Healthy Michigan Plan. In my opinion, if any health professional is in the business to make as much money as possible (thus excluding the lower-paying Medicaid plans), they're in the wrong business. Dentists should be concerned with attending to ALL teeth, whether they belong to someone who's poor or not. Of course they're free to decide which insurances to accept or not to accept, but I believe everyone deserves to have nice, healthy teeth and to be treated with dignity at the dentist's. It's extremely frustrating and stressful when a poor person wants good dental treatment, and there's hardly anyone who will see them because hardly anyone accepts Medicaid for financial reasons. It's wrong. Please have a heart for the poor. In summary, I give Dr. McDonald a 2-3 star rating (with the hope that he will improve in future) and the rest of the office a 4-5 star rating, resulting in an overall 3-3.5 star rating.
